Who we are
We are building a grassroots movement here in Australia to stand up to the fossil fuel industry, and support a just transition from coal, oil and gas to a renewable-energy future for all. Our vision is for a future that is just and equitable, with our communities and ecosystems thriving and protected from the impacts of climate change.
As a national grassroots movement with a history of supporting the local divestment movement that saw trillions of funds move away from fossil fuels, at 350 Australia we will focus on cutting the flow of private and public finance to new gas projects, and building social and political opposition.
Why Australian banks?
2021, we launched a campaign targeting NAB, calling on them to rule out financing new oil and gas projects as part of their policy review process. Following sustained pressure on the NAB executive and board in the lead up to their AGM, we saw NAB release a policy that is substantially stronger than any other big four banks – but still leaves loopholes open to continue funding new gas fields under limited circumstances.
In 2022 we will continue our campaign targeting the big four banks through the Bank on our Future campaign, with a focus on holding NAB to account, and influencing Commonwealth Bank to rule out new oil and gas projects as part of their existing policy review process, due to conclude in 2023. In addition, we will support 350 Japan’s campaign calling for major Australian gas financier, SMBC, to rule out fossil fuel financing.
